1. Product Description

Fume hoods are an integral part of most labs. These ventilated enclosures enable laboratory personnel to safely work with materials that produce hazardous fumes and volatile vapors. Selecting a fume hood that is the right fit for your laboratory is important and there are many different ducted and ductless designs to choose from. Traditionally, fume hoods consume large amounts of energy, but many newer units are designed with energy efficiency in mind, which reduces operating costs while providing the necessary protection.

    3. Type of Fume Hood

Laboratory fume hoods can be fabricated from different materials and include specific surface types, such as stainless steel, fiberglass, PVC or even polypropylene.

Chemical fume hoods are a mainstay for most research and educational labs. They protect users from chemical and radiological exposure. Ideal if you plan on conducting experiments that use toxic or volatile chemicals to lower the chances of inhalation.

Laminar flow hoods protect the samples from contamination. They do not offer lab personnel any protection; thus, you must not use them when working with toxic or infectious chemicals.

Demonstration or educational hoods: These are optimized for teaching. An example is the double-faced fume hoods, which have entrances on both sides, allowing for 360-degree viewing.

Biological Safety Cabinets (BSCs) have a different application and do not fall within the fume hood category. They are, however, a must-have for labs that handle viral microbes and infectious diseases.4. Detailed Photos

    5. FAQ

The process of researching and purchasing the right fume hood for your laboratory can seem overwhelming and choosing the right one is crucial to ensuring safety from dangerous chemicals and vapors in your lab.

Here are a few important questions and considerations to help you choose the right fume hood for your lab.

    1. What type of work are you conducting inside your fume hood
      • Review your experiment methods and material lists.
        • Document which chemicals, or solvents, you will be using and the concentration of each chemical
        • Determine the evaporation rate of the chemicals.
          • Chemical solvents evaporate at different rates and if not accounted for, can overwhelm the fume hood by evaporating at a rate too fast for the fume hood to ventilate
    2. What size lab hood do you need?
      • Will you have equipment inside your laboratory fume hood?
      • How large is the equipment?
        • If your application involves extra-large equipment, such as drum containers, a walk-in fume hood might be appropriate.
      • How many people will be working simultaneously under the fume hood?
        • Depth - Consider buffer space.
        • Perform your work at least 6 inches behind the sash to ensure a safety buffer zone is maintained.
        • Height - Make sure your lab has ample height clearance for a larger bench top or floor mounted fume hood.
    3. How will fumes be filtered and exhausted?
      • Duct or ductless
        • A ducted fume hood connects to a remote blower of the facility HVAC system to safely remove noxious or dangerous chemicals from the work area.
        • A ductless fume hood contains an integral blower, carbon filters to capture chemical vapors and, if required, HEPA/ULPA particle filters to allow recirculation of exhaust air.
    4. Which ventilation system should you use for a ducted fume hood?
      • A ducted fume hood has two (2) options for ventilation control, constant air volume (CAV) and variable air volume (VAV).
        • To choose between CAV and VAV, you will need to take into consideration both operating duration and budget.
    5. What are the Operating costs and install of a fume hood?
      • Operating Costs:
        • Ductless fume hood = the majority of operating costs for a ductless fume hood will come from filter charges.
        • Ducted fume hood = The cost of operating a ducted fume hood can be calculated as a function of how much air the blower is exhausting. Thus, the operating cost increases as a function of volume of air (DFM) being moved.
    6. What accessories will you need for your fume hood?
      • Fume hood accessories include base cabinets, light fixtures, airflow monitors, electrical outlets, cup sinks, and service fixtures for water, vacuum, or gas.

    6. What Type of Fume Hood Fan or Blower Do You Need?

Which type of blower you need depends on the intended use. If you are venting non-toxic materials, for example, you could use a steel blower coated with epoxy.

If the purpose is to mix acids, you will need an acid-resistant blower. PVC is often the best material choice for perchloric acids and other corrosive operations.

Where the chemicals in your lab are moderately or highly corrosive, fiberglass is also a good option. If your work is volatile, there are even blowers with explosion-proofing and those that are resistant to sparks.

These fume hood blowers will often come with an enclosed motor that ensures fumes in the air stream won't encounter a spark or touch the motor.

If there's any chance of fumes in your lab catching on fire, spark resistance should prioritize.
