Lenovo Introduces Legion Slim 5 (14", Gen 8): First Legion Gaming Laptop with 14

Lenovo is set to release a new gaming laptop in its Legion line, and it comes with some noteworthy features that are a first for the series. The Legion Slim 5 (14″, Gen 8) is the first-ever Legion gaming laptop to feature a 14-inch class (14.5-inch) display, along with a redesigned keyboard to accommodate its compact size. Additionally, it is the first laptop in the Legion ecosystem to boast an OLED panel.

OLED technology is usually found in premium productivity laptops and a few high-end gaming notebooks, often with a higher price tag. However, the starting price for the Legion Slim 5 is $1,439.99, which is quite reasonable for a gaming laptop. The specifications of the baseline model are yet to be revealed for a proper evaluation of its value proposition.

The Legion Slim 5’s OLED panel offers a WQXGA+ (2880×1800) resolution, a 16:10 aspect ratio, a 120Hz refresh rate, and 100% coverage of the DCI-P3 color space. Lenovo might offer multiple versions of the laptop, as the datasheet mentions it being “up to VESA TrueBlack 400 certified” and supporting Dolby Vision for HDR content.

Under the hood, the Legion Slim 5 is powered by an AMD-based system, with options including up to a Ryzen 9 7940HS processor and a GeForce RTX 4060 8GB GPU for graphics. It can also be configured with up to 64GB of LPDDR5X-6400 RAM and a 512GB or 1TB PCIe 4.0 solid-state drive.

Notably, the laptop features an AI chip, the LA1 AI chip, which works in conjunction with Lenovo’s AI Engine+ software to optimize performance based on the user’s needs. The algorithm becomes more intelligent over time as it adapts to the user’s habits.

The Legion Slim 5 also offers a range of ports and I/O features, despite its small size. These include USB Type-C ports, a 4-in-1 SD card reader, an E-shutter button, a 3.5mm audio combo jack, a DC-in port, a USB 3.2 Gen2 Type-A port, an always-on USB 3.2 Gen2 Type-A port, and an HDMI 2.1 port.

Other features of the Legion Slim 5 include Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.1 (or higher) wireless connectivity, two 2W speakers with Nahimic audio, a backlit TrueStrike keyboard with 1.5mm of key travel and swappable key caps, and it comes pre-installed with Windows 11.
